OpenAI Codex is the 2025 reboot of OpenAI's coding agent: an open-source Rust CLI plus a cloud product that runs alongside it. The CLI reads, edits and executes code in the directory you point it at, with model switching across GPT-5.5, GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.3-Codex. Codex Cloud parallelises longer tasks across managed environments, and both surfaces expose MCP so any MCP server you have plugs into the agent.
Best for: Best for founders and engineering teams who live in the terminal, want a Claude Code alternative inside the OpenAI stack, and already pay for ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Business.

Sam Altman launched and publicly champions OpenAI Codex as the company's agentic coding agent. After the desktop expansion in March 2026 he said Codex now completes coding jobs while he steps away, framing it as the proof point that autonomous coding agents are close. By the same announcement Codex was reported at 3M+ active users and positioned as OpenAI's direct rival to Anthropic's Claude Code.

OpenAI Codex is listed in the Shopify AI Toolkit launch post that Tobi reposted. Codex shows up alongside Claude Code and Cursor as a supported MCP client, slotting into the per-developer-choice approach the engineering org takes. Tobi has been explicit that Shopify lets engineers pick the agent that fits their work rather than mandating one client.
